Help kids, Buy Shoes!

With bicycles as our only form of transportation on Nantucket, shoes quickly became an issue.  I needed a flexible, stylish, comfortable slip on.  A pair that wouldn’t get caught in the pedals.  A pair that can be easily cleaned.  A pair that looks casually stylish for job interviews. After online shopping, I quickly vetoed several forms of sneakers–while nikes may be colorfully hip, they aren’t appropriate for job searching. While Jack Purcell converse may have that classic nantucket prep feel, the laces just aren’t practical for summer days at the beach.  While keds may have that summer association, they would dirty too easily. After days of searching, I finally found the perfect pair, Toms.333-1019B09-UNNvY-H They come in several stylish colors of canvas. They’re extremely easy to slip on and off. And they’re perfectly appropriate for job searching. Plus, if you buy a pair of Toms a second pair is shipped to a child who can’t afford shoes.  Are you kidding me? All I have to do to help impoverished children is buy shoes?! When I heard this, I was hooked.  I ordered my Toms right away!  Check them out for yourself at http://www.tomsshoes.com.  Don’t forget to look at their wrap boots! Such a cool idea!

Of the Moment…

With no job, no money, and no sun, I’ve been fighting off inside boredom with the help of Kobe, my macbook.  I’ve been fashion blog/magazine reading like nobody’s business.  I’ve come up with a few current obsessions in no particular order–a medley of blogs, trends, looks and celebrities that I can’t stop talking about.

First obsession–the store Opening Ceremony:

Aimed at the young and obscenely wealthy with some pieces of clothing ranging into the thousands, Opening Ceremony is a very expensive store.  With two locations: New York and Los Angeles, Opening Ceremony carries a lot of brand new designers.  The clothing may be expensive, but you are really paying for the innovation.  The store carries pieces you won’t see anywhere else. When I visited the store’s La Cinega Blvd location just last year (for inspiration solely), I stumbled upon actress Chloe Sevigny’s collection. This year, on the store’s website I fell in love with few pieces designed by model and Alexander Wang muse Erin Wasson.  This store has Nylon Magazine written all over it.  Here are a few pieces I would love to own…

Second obsession–A few accessories from Barney’s (hopefully no summary required) that I would also love to own…

Proenza Schouler-medium suede PS1 bag in sand (you've probably seen this bag in some variation on the arms of the Olsens)

Third Obsession—Black Cab Sessions

Artists sit in the back of a taxi and debut some of their music live…raw gritty music–fun site to explore

Most recently Lykke Li was in the passenger seat.

Fourth Obsession—A few celebs to throw into the mix

The dress is pretty crazy, but I think the print works because of the dress’ simple classic cut.

2. Diane Kruger

A Preppy Post…

As you should all know, I’m spending this summer in Nantucket.  The vacation destination has a reputation for being pretentiously preppy.  I’ve never really been into seersucker pants, polo shirts or boat shoes.  Living in the city, my style has always gravitated towards the edgy, dark colored, studded look.  Since it’s not really practical to wear black all summer (I’ve debated this many times), I’ve decided to test the preppy waters.  I’m not saying I’m going to be popping my collar any time soon, but there are a few preppy additions I have added to my everyday apparel.  Here are some easy ways to incorporate summer prep into your wardrobe without going by the name Muffy or Chip.

Leather jackets have become a staple in every fashionable woman’s wardrobe.  While most of us can’t afford the perfect leather jacket, it doesn’t mean we don’t want to look them…here are some designer jackets to lust after…

If you haven’t discovered Elizabeth and James, you are seriously missing out!  The Olsen twin’s collection takes classic jersey pieces and adds an innovative/sexy edge to them.  While fellow designers had their doubts about the collection after seeing the Olsen’s other collection the Row gain slight popularity and then become nearly obsolete, with Elizabeth and James the Olsen twins made it big.  With this collection, they proved themselves as designers. Here are several of my favorite pieces from the current collection…

Favorites from the Met Ball..

Sorry I haven’t been posting recently. I’m struggling as it’s finals week, but I just had to devote at least one post to the Met Ball that was last night.  The dresses/ensembles were simply too beautiful to put off. While the theme was “models as muses,” I think more than just the models’ outfits were muse-worthy. Here are some of my favs…some commentary included…    (photos: style.com)

Ashley Olsen in her own line The Row (I love her new haircut, very Gwenyth)

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson (she's wearing Chanel Haute Couture) I have to say I'm always a fan of Chanel's white lace (remember Maggie Gyllenhall's white lace with pink bow?)
